A: You will say what you would like to work on. The facilitator will ask you questions and lead you through various processes that will help you change it. The idea is to get to feel and think differently about it, and become more resourceful in dealing with your life. That might involve visualizations, examining how you think, exploring traumatic events in your life, uncovering your sub-conscious programming, accessing new sources of insight, integrating unbalanced aspects of your psyche, and more.
Q: How do I need to prepare?
A: You just need to have a reasonably good idea of what you'd like to work on. What would you like to solve? What would you like to change about yourself? You need to have some idea of what it is you're having a problem with. You don't need to worry in advance about what the solution is. The solutions are the stuff you don't know yet, and might well be surprising. Other than that, just try to be well rested and arrange an undisturbed space for the session.
Q: What if I don't know what my problem is?
A: That's the whole point. It probably isn't what you think it is. So, don't try to settle in advance on what the precise problem is. Just give some thought to the general area. Is it your relationship with your partner? Is it your fears and anxieties? Is it that you'd like to pass the bar exam? Is it that you don't know what to do in life?
Q: Will I be hypnotized?
A: Oh, maybe a little bit. Some techniques of Ericksonian hypnosis might be used. But there's really nothing very mysterious about that. The facilitator might give suggestions that make you more relaxed and able to look at things you don't get around to dealing with in everyday life. It isn't about losing control or anything.
Q: What is NLP?
A: Neuro-Linguistic Programming. A fancy word for saying that we'd look at how you're wired. I.e. the structure of how you think and feel. And we'll use language to re-arrange it in the way that works best for you.
Q: Is this like a psychic reading?
Q: No. The answers will come from you. But the facilitator is good at getting answers out of you that you didn't know existed, so feel free to believe he's psychic.
Q: Will you tell me what's wrong with me and what I should do?
A: I will help you discover what is going on for you, and what else you can do. This approach is non-judgemental. I will not tell you you're wrong. I will help you see some more options, and ways around your problems.
Q: Will you think badly of me because of the mess I'm in, or because of who I am?
A: Again, no. This is non-judgemental. However embarrassing or socially unacceptable your problems or your habits might be, you will not be judged for them here. You will be helped to have more options, if that is what serves you best.
Q: Are we just going to talk?
A: Well, yes, but not in the sense of going to a shrink who listens to you for 45 minutes and then tells you the session is over. We're working towards noticably resolving something in each session, and towards working through certain processes to a good result. It is the faciliators job to keep track of that. For you it might just seem like a conversation that makes you deal with some things you hadn't thought of, and that leaves you different afterwards.
Q: How long time does it take to solve ____?
A: It depends on a lot of things. Sometimes huge life changes might happen in one session, and you start living differently right away. Other things are an ongoing process that one works through in life over longer time. What for one person is a life-long learning process might be a one-session fix for another. It really depends on what it is for you, not necessarily on what kind of issue it is. Most things have the potential for being changed quickly. It is not the time that is important. Real change is often instant, but it might take some work to prepare for that point.
Q: How many sessions do I need?
A: Well, start with one, and go from there. You might have gotten what you came for. Or you might want to engage in an ongoing program of personal growth. It is up to you.
Q: How long is a session?
A: About an hour. But it might be a bit more or less, as we're aiming for ending at a good point, without being in the middle of something.
Q: Can one really do this over online text messaging?
A: Yes. Some people even prefer it that way. It is different than when it is in person or over the phone. The facilitator can't see you or hear you, obviously. So it is a little more important that you tell what is going on for you. But all that is needed is a medium of communication.
Q: What is the unconscious?
A: We'd prefer calling it the sub-conscious mind. Really it is how your reality is structured. Most of the time you're completely dependent on what it hands to you. You don't go around thinking about your name all the time. When you need it, the sub-conscious mind hands it to you, and if it feels about right, you say it. You probably don't really know where it was stored or by what process it was brought back to you. It is like that with many things in your life. You're very dependent on what your sub-conscious mind provides you with. A lot of the time that's a wonderful thing. You can drive a car and speak complicated sentences, without having to worry about where exactly the words come from. And you can walk and breathe and chew gum. But sometimes what is presented by the sub-conscious as your reality is not what works for you. Your stored programming might make you anxious or angry or incapable in the "wrong" places, where it really doesn't serve you. That's the stuff we're likely to want to shed some light on so it can be examined and, if necessary, re-wired.
Q: So, is it just about feeling a little better about my situation?
A: No, it is about changing your reality. It isn't about applying a fresh layer of paint on top of a ruin. It is about changing the foundation and the structure of it so it no longer is a ruin.
